Selaqui nagar palika 2026: Dehradun town upgrade and a hospital plan

On 19 October 2026 the chief minister said Selaqui, west of Dehradun, will be raised from nagar panchayat to nagar palika. A super speciality hospital there is also proposed.

What happened

Selaqui sits on the Dehradun–Paonta highway in Sahaspur block, west of the city. It is best known for the SIIDCUL industrial area. It is run today by a nagar panchayat, the smallest kind of urban local body.

Nagar panchayat to nagar palika, 19 October. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami was in Selaqui on Monday, 19 October 2026, for an event at the Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Uttarakhand Medical Education University. Amar Ujala's local edition reported that he announced Selaqui would be upgraded from a nagar panchayat to a nagar palika (municipal council). The report said the decision was taken because of Selaqui's growing population and its industrial importance, and that it would speed up basic facilities and development work in the area.

That is one report of a spoken announcement. Other reports of the same event that we read, from UNI Varta, Khabar Fast, Doon Horizon and Live SKG News, covered the university projects and the hospital but did not mention the nagar palika. We found no government notification yet. None of the reports said which villages or colonies would fall inside the new boundary, how many wards it would have, or when it would take effect.

₹20.55 crore of university works. At the same event, the chief minister laid foundation stones for three projects worth ₹20.21 crore on the university campus: an administrative building, an amphitheatre and a nakshatra vatika (star garden). He opened two works worth ₹34 lakh: the main gate and a dental clinic. Amar Ujala, UNI Varta and Khabar Fast all carried these figures.

A super speciality hospital is proposed. Doon Horizon, Shikhar Himalaya and Live SKG News reported on 19 and 20 October that the state has sent a proposal to the Union Health Ministry for a super speciality hospital on the university campus. Doon Horizon said it would serve patients from Pachwadoon, Jaunsar-Bawar and the Uttarkashi border areas, who now go to Dehradun or AIIMS Rishikesh. No report gave a bed count, cost or date. It is a proposal waiting for central approval.

Health Minister Subodh Uniyal, Sahaspur MLA Sahdev Singh Pundir and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Bhanu Duggal were present, the reports said.

It comes a week after a water tender. On 11 October 2026 Doon Khabar reported that Uttarakhand Peyjal Nigam had invited bids for a ₹95.19 crore Selaqui water supply scheme. We covered that in our post on the Selaqui water tender and Sahaspur road works.

What it means for buyers and renters in Selaqui and west Dehradun

This section is our view.

It is an announcement, not yet a change. Until a notification fixes the boundary, nothing changes for a plot or house. Do not pay extra because a seller says "this is now nagar palika". Ask to see the notification, and check whether the khasra falls inside the new limits once they are drawn.

A bigger civic body usually brings more services and more tax. A nagar palika normally has more staff and a larger budget for roads, drains, street lights and waste collection. It also usually means house tax is assessed more fully. Owners in newly added villages should expect to be surveyed and billed in time. Map approval still sits with MDDA. Building plans in the Dehradun area are approved by the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority, whatever the local body. The hospital matters only if it is approved. A super speciality hospital would help Selaqui as a place to live, and could add rental demand from staff and patients' families. But it is at the proposal stage. Treat it as a possible plus, not a reason to buy now.

Who this suits. Selaqui works for buyers who want larger plots at lower rates than the city, and for landlords renting to factory and university staff. Questions people ask

Has Selaqui become a nagar palika?

Not yet in law, as far as we can find. Amar Ujala reported that the chief minister announced the upgrade on 19 October 2026. We found no government notification, boundary or start date as of 21 October.

Will house tax go up in Selaqui?

No new rates have been announced. A nagar palika usually assesses property tax more fully than a nagar panchayat, so owners, especially in any newly added areas, should expect a survey and bills over time.

Is the Selaqui super speciality hospital approved?

No. The state has sent a proposal to the Union Health Ministry for a hospital on the medical university campus. No cost, bed count or date has been given.
