Where to stay on the Gangotri route: Harsil, Uttarkashi and a quiet base in Dehradun
For a Gangotri trip, stay one night in or near Uttarkashi and two in Harsil, and keep a calm night in Dehradun at either end. Here are three stays we list, what each costs and who each suits
Harsil: Harsil Village Resort
Harsil sits at about 2,620 m in the Bhagirathi valley, roughly 25 km below Gangotri. Harsil Village Resort is a family-run place in a working apple orchard near the PNB Bank.
- Premium Cottage, ₹7,500 a night for up to 3 guests: a standalone timber cottage with a private sit-out and river views
- Heritage Room, ₹4,500 a night for up to 2 guests: deodar-wood interiors in the main house
- Breakfast and parking are included, and they will pack an early breakfast for a Gangotri start
- Room heaters, hot water all day and 24×7 power backup
Bagori village, Dharali and Mukhba are all within 3 km, and Gangotri Dham is about an hour's drive. Mobile data is Jio and BSNL only, and cards are not always accepted, so carry cash.
Uttarkashi: Shiv Parivar Resort
Shiv Parivar Resort is on the Bhagirathi at Bhareti Chungi, on New Bypass Road about 3 km before Uttarkashi town. It is a good first or last night on the route.
- Deluxe Double Room from ₹5,500 a night, with river views
- Triple Bed Room from ₹6,500 a night, for families
- Breakfast is included, and every room has AC, Wi-Fi, a TV and a kettle
- The restaurant is pure vegetarian and the property is alcohol-free
- Free morning yoga on the riverbank, and help planning treks like Dayara Bugyal and Gaumukh
Gangotri is about 95 km (around 4 hours) from here.
Dehradun: Shivoham Retreat
Shivoham Retreat is in Sinola near Malsi, 500 m from Robber's Cave and about 35 km from Jolly Grant airport. It is a quiet place to land before the drive up, or to rest after it.
- Luxury Valley Facing Room, ₹3,500 a night for 2, with a private east-facing balcony
- Luxury Studio Room, ₹4,000 a night for 2
- Harmony House, ₹6,000 a night for 4: a whole two-bedroom house with its own entrance and garden access
- Breakfast, welcome chai, Wi-Fi and AC are included, and there is a guest kitchen, a permaculture garden and a yoga deck
- The food is vegetarian (sattvic) only, and airport pickup can be arranged
A simple Gangotri plan
- Day 1: Fly into Jolly Grant or drive to Dehradun, and stay in Sinola.
- Day 2: Drive to Uttarkashi (about 6 hours), and stay by the river.
- Day 3: Drive on to Harsil, and stay two nights.
- Day 4: Make a day trip to Gangotri Dham, with an early packed breakfast.
- Day 5 onwards: Drive back down, breaking the journey in Uttarkashi or Dehradun.
