IIM Kashipur Dehradun campus, September 2026: what it means near Sudhowala

IIM Kashipur held the bhoomi pujan for a Dehradun campus on a five-acre plot in September 2026. It will start in a prefabricated building with executive MBA and training courses.

What happened

The ceremony. Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan performed the bhoomi pujan for the Dehradun campus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Kashipur. IIM Kashipur's director, Prof. Neeraj Dwivedi, was present. Front News Network also named CPWD Chief Engineer Devendra Prakash among those who attended.

The reports do not agree on the date. Univarta and Front News Network, both published on 23 September 2026, describe the ceremony as held on Wednesday, which was 23 September. Careers360 gave the date as 24 September 2026. DD India carried the PTI report on 24 September and said only that it was held on Wednesday.

Where and how big. DD India, carrying PTI, and Careers360 reported that the campus will be built on a five-acre plot in phases, in line with the institute's academic needs. Pioneer Edge reported that the plot is at Sudhowala in Dehradun, on the western side of the city. The other reports we read did not name the locality.

What it will start with. To make an early start, the first phase will be a prefabricated building with classrooms and offices, according to PTI. Pioneer Edge reported that it will first be used for the institute's executive MBA, executive education and management development programmes. It will also house the Foundation for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development (FIED), the institute's incubation centre. Pioneer Edge said the work is being carried out by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD).

Pioneer Edge also reported that, in the longer term, the institute may look at undergraduate or integrated management programmes in Dehradun, subject to its academic plans. That is a possibility, not a decision.

What is not known. None of the reports we read gave a cost, a construction schedule or a date when classes will begin in Dehradun. None gave expected student numbers.

Univarta's report quoted the Chief Secretary as saying the campus will give students from the state and the region better chances to get high-quality management education.

At Doon Hospital, too. In a separate development, Doon Horizon reported that on 29 August 2026 Health Minister Subodh Uniyal opened a 12-bed cardiology wing and an upgraded emergency medicine ward at Government Doon Medical College Hospital. It also reported that the college began an MCh Urology super-speciality course, which it described as a first for a government medical college in the state.

What it means for buyers and renters in Dehradun

This section is our view.

Do not expect a student rush yet. Executive MBA and short management courses mostly draw working people who come for a few days at a time or live in the city already. They do not fill PGs the way a full-time undergraduate campus does. Unless the institute starts full-time residential programmes, the direct effect on rents near Sudhowala is likely to be small for now.

Short stays may see some demand. Executive batches, visiting faculty and incubation-centre start-ups need short-term rooms, guest houses and small offices. If you own a furnished flat or a homestay on the Chakrata Road side, this is the kind of demand worth watching. It is likely to grow slowly rather than all at once.

Do not pay a premium on an announcement. A five-acre institute in phases, with no published schedule, is not the same as a working campus. Sellers often quote a higher rate as soon as a big name lands nearby. Compare with recent deals in the area first.
