Dehradun piped gas 2026: PNG push after monsoon and the LPG rule for homes

What happened

A review in August. Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan reviewed piped natural gas (PNG) pipeline and connection work across the state at the Secretariat in Dehradun on 24 August 2026, Uktez and Ishmeet News reported. District magistrates, the supply department and gas company representatives attended. He told agencies to lay pipelines on a war footing once the rains end and road-cutting permission is given. All PNG work in Haridwar district is to be finished before Kumbh 2027.

Plan roads with gas in mind. According to both reports, every district has to send a detailed action plan so that PNG lines are built into new road and construction projects. The aim is to avoid digging up the same roads again. Agencies were told to restore roads and other public property to their earlier condition on time and to the set conditions. The supply department was asked to draw up a clear policy on land allocation, lease and rent for gas company infrastructure. Each agency is to work to weekly targets. Neither report gave any new figure for Dehradun city.

Where Dehradun stood earlier this year. Amar Ujala reported on 25 March 2026 that the Chief Secretary had ordered a fast expansion of PNG after an LPG cylinder shortage hit the capital. It said about 2,100 households and 25 commercial establishments in Dehradun were connected. Over 250 km of pipeline was working and about 100 km more was waiting for gas. About 35,000 homes already had pipe fittings and meters but were not yet linked to the main line. The report blamed the slow pace on work stopping for about six months a year because of weather, night-only work permits, and permits being cancelled over contractor negligence.

A long-running gap. The gap between fittings and actual supply is old. In October 2024, Amar Ujala reported that about 31,000 Dehradun homes had connections but gas had reached the stoves of only about 350. ETV Bharat reported on 29 March 2026 that five companies supply PNG in Uttarakhand, including GAIL Gas, and that the state target was 1.5 lakh connections by April 2026. We did not find a report saying whether that target was met.

The LPG rule. News on Air reported on 15 March 2026 that the Union petroleum ministry had told households with both PNG and LPG connections to surrender their LPG connection with immediate effect. They cannot get LPG refills or a new LPG connection from the government oil companies. Business Today reported on 6 May 2026 that households where PNG is available were given until 30 June 2026 to switch, after which cylinder supply could stop. It also reported that tenants applying for PNG need a no-objection certificate from the landlord and proof of the landlord's ownership.

A national incentive. Business Today reported on 22 August 2026 that a central incentive scheme for domestic PNG connections starts on 1 September 2026 and runs for six months. It rewards city gas companies with extra gas for each new billed home connection above a threshold. It is not a direct subsidy to households.

What it means for buyers and tenants in Dehradun

This section is our view.

Ask whether gas actually flows. A meter on the wall does not mean the home gets gas. Before you buy or rent, ask whether the flat or house has a live PNG supply, a fitted but inactive line, or nothing. Ask for a recent gas bill if the seller says it is live.

Know the LPG rule before you sign. If a home has an active PNG connection, you cannot keep a domestic LPG cylinder there under the March 2026 order. That is fine if supply is steady, but ask neighbours how often it is cut. Add this to your list of checks before you pay for a flat.

Landlords, keep your papers ready. Tenants need your NOC and proof of ownership to apply for PNG, according to Business Today. Owners who want a smoother let should be ready with these. Our checklist for renting out your house or shop covers the other documents.

Expect digging after the monsoon. If pipeline work restarts as directed, more roads in the city will be dug up this winter. If you are viewing homes now, ask whether your lane is on the gas company's plan. Do not pay more because a seller says gas is "coming soon"; Dehradun has heard that since 2019. Questions people ask

Can I keep my LPG cylinder after getting PNG in Dehradun?

No, not a domestic LPG connection from the government oil companies. The petroleum ministry's March 2026 order says households with PNG must surrender LPG and cannot get refills, News on Air reported.

Which areas of Dehradun have PNG?

The reports we read did not list current live areas. Amar Ujala reported in March 2026 that about 2,100 households were connected and about 35,000 homes had fittings waiting for the main line. Ask GAIL Gas about your specific address.

Can a tenant apply for a PNG connection?

Yes, but Business Today reported that tenants need a no-objection certificate from the landlord and the landlord's ownership papers.
