Uttarakhand winter tourism 2026: events, Char Dham closing and hill stays

What happened

A push beyond Mussoorie and Nainital. On 27 August 2026, Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan chaired a meeting in Dehradun on winter tourism, Garhwal Post and Pratahkal reported. He said tourism should not stay limited to busy places like Nainital and Mussoorie. He asked GMVN, KMVN and other departments to identify areas with winter tourism potential, develop new trekking routes, and plan products such as high-altitude marathons and bird watching. Asianet News Hindi reported that he asked for local tour operators and communities to be involved. He directed that another meeting be held within 15 days and that a tourism conclave be organised. We could not find a report of that follow-up meeting.

A revised event calendar. Indian Masterminds reported on 3 October 2026 that the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board has released a revised event calendar for 2026-27, with a budget of ₹21.35 crore for 20 main events. Events near Dehradun and in Garhwal include:

  • Himalayan Car Rally, proposed for 19 to 21 November 2026, passing through Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri Garhwal, Almora and Nainital.
  • Ultimate Uttarakhand MTB Challenge, a 700 km cycle race from Mukteshwar to Mussoorie via Bageshwar, Karnaprayag and Guptkashi, rescheduled to 20 to 26 November 2026, with a ₹2.50 crore budget.
  • Dayara Winter Carnival in Uttarkashi district, proposed for February 2027, with a ₹60 lakh budget.
  • Tehri Aero Festival, moved to January 2027, with dates still pending.

Sources differ on the cycle race. Amar Ujala reported on 4 September 2026 that the MTB challenge would run from 14 to 20 October, with over 60 international professional cyclists, and that Tourism Secretary Dhiraj Garbyal had chaired the planning meeting. The later Indian Masterminds report says the race was rescheduled to 20 to 26 November. We have treated the November dates as the latest, but check with the tourism board before you plan around them.

Char Dham closing dates are not yet announced. Times Now Hindi reported that Kedarnath is expected to close on 11 November 2026, on Bhai Dooj, but said this should not be treated as final. The Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee normally announces the date around Vijayadashami, and its website did not yet show the 2026 date. After closing, Kedarnath's deity moves to the Omkareshwar temple at Ukhimath for the winter. Gangotri's winter seat is Mukhba village near Harsil. Hemkund Sahib's yatra was set to close on 10 October 2026, according to Panchur Varta, which quoted the trust's chairman.

The winter circuit so far. In January 2026, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami opened a three-day winter tourism conclave in Uttarkashi, Indian Masterminds reported. About 150 tour operators took part and visited Mukhba, Kharsali and the Kedarkanta base camp at Sankri. The Chief Minister spoke of simplified homestay policies and single-window approvals.

What it means for buyers and hill-stay owners in Dehradun

This section is our view.

Winter demand is being planned, but not guaranteed. The state clearly wants visitors in the cold months. Events and winter yatra promotion can fill rooms on certain dates. They do not change the basic pattern that many hill stays run thin from December to February. Plan your costs for a quiet winter and treat event weeks as a bonus.

Watch the dates, not the headlines. Dates in this calendar have already moved once. Before you take bookings or raise prices for a rally or carnival, check the confirmed date with the tourism board or the district office.

Get your registration in order before the season. If you run a homestay near Mussoorie, Dhanaulti, Chakrata or on the Gangotri route, make sure it is registered with the tourism department. Our post on Uttarakhand homestay rules and registration covers what hosts need. Check winter water supply, backup power and road access, because guests will ask.

Buying a hill property for rental income? Ask the seller for actual monthly occupancy figures for the last two winters, not just peak-season rates. A property on a road that stays open in snow is worth more than one that is cut off for weeks. Our guide to where to stay in Harsil on the Gangotri route gives a sense of that area. Questions people ask

When will the Char Dham temples close for winter in 2026?

Reports expect Kedarnath to close on 11 November 2026, on Bhai Dooj, but the official dates had not been announced when we checked. The temple committees usually confirm them around Vijayadashami.

What winter events are planned near Dehradun and Mussoorie?

The revised calendar lists the Himalayan Car Rally through Dehradun from 19 to 21 November 2026, and a 700 km cycle race ending in Mussoorie from 20 to 26 November. An earlier report gave October dates for the race.

Is the state developing new winter destinations?

Yes, on paper. The Chief Secretary asked departments on 27 August 2026 to identify new winter destinations and circuits. No list of new destinations in Dehradun district has been published that we could find.
