Uttarakhand tourism October 2026: hotels fill again after a weak monsoon

Hill hotels and homestays near Dehradun filled up in early October 2026 after a rain-hit monsoon, and the state released a revised tourism events calendar for 2026-27.

What happened

A poor monsoon for hill hotels. On 29 August 2026, Amar Ujala reported that hotel occupancy in Mussoorie had fallen to 25-30% in July and August. It said rain had been continuous since 5 July, with several landslides on the Dehradun-Mussoorie road, and that tourism was down about 20% on the previous year. Hoteliers told the paper that old photos and news of road closures kept circulating on social media after roads reopened, and that this led tourists to cancel bookings. Sandeep Sahni, president of the Uttarakhand Hotel Association, told Amar Ujala the road had been blocked a few times but never for more than a day. Sanjay Agrawal, president of the Mussoorie Hotel Association, also spoke to the paper. The hoteliers asked the government to reassure visitors that Mussoorie was safe.

A full first weekend in October. Amar Ujala reported on 3 October 2026, from Chakrata in Dehradun district, that hotels, resorts, homestays and restaurants were full over the first weekend of the month. The Gandhi Jayanti holiday joined the weekend to make a long break. Visitors came from Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh and Noida, and went to places such as Tiger Fall, Moila Top and Koti Kanasar. Operators told the paper that June had been good but that rain from July to September had badly hurt business.

A revised events calendar. The Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board released a revised event calendar for 2026-27, reported by Indian Masterminds and ETV Bharat on 3 October 2026. It lists 20 events with a board-approved budget of ₹21.35 crore. Three new events were added. The Himalayan Car Rally is set for 19-21 November 2026 on a route through Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri Garhwal, Almora and Nainital. An ATOAI adventure tour operators' convention is set for Kausani on 13-16 December. A "Weddings in Uttarakhand" conclave is set for Ramnagar on 15-20 December.

Dates that moved. The High Altitude Marathon and Adi Kailash Parikrama 2.0 in Pithoragarh is now on 24-26 October, with a ₹3 crore budget. The Ultimate Uttarakhand MTB Challenge is on 20-26 November with ₹2.50 crore. The Tehri Aero Festival moves to January 2027. Winter carnivals in Munsiyari, Auli and Dayara are listed for February 2027. Tourism Secretary Dhiraj Garbyal said the schedule lets visitors see different parts of the state at different times of year. Neither report listed a separate event in Dehradun city, Mussoorie or Rishikesh beyond the car rally route.

Festive demand looks strong nationally. Kalkine reported on 10 October 2026, citing data from the travel platform Scapia, that hotel searches had risen for Rishikesh and Haridwar among other religious destinations, as people combine temple visits with long weekends. The same data put Christmas and New Year room rates nearly 40% above regular dates. These are national booking figures, not a survey of Uttarakhand hotels.

What it means for hotel, homestay and holiday-home owners in Dehradun

This section is our view.

Budget for a bad monsoon. The August figures show how fast a hill property's income can drop. If you are buying a homestay or holiday home near Mussoorie or Chakrata with an income plan, assume July to September may earn little. Price the property on what it earns in a normal year, not one good weekend.

Road access matters more than the view. The complaint in August was about roads and how fast news of closures spread. A property on a road that stays open, or one that is easy to reach from Dehradun, will hold bookings better. Ask the seller how many days access was cut in the last two monsoons.

Plan for the winter peak. Diwali, Christmas and New Year are the next busy windows. If you rent out a room or a house to visitors, check that your registration is in order first. Events help other districts more than Dehradun. Most of the calendar is in Kumaon, Tehri, Pauri and Chamoli. Dehradun benefits mainly as the gateway city and from the car rally route. Do not assume an event will fill rooms in the city itself.
