Delhi–Dehradun Expressway is open: what six months of a 2.5-hour drive means for Dehradun property in 2026
The 213 km Delhi–Dehradun Economic Corridor opened on 14 April 2026. The government says it cuts the drive from over six hours to about 2.5. City traffic is the next problem.
What happened
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Delhi–Dehradun Economic Corridor at a public function in Dehradun on 14 April 2026. The details below come from the Press Information Bureau (PIB):
- The corridor is 213 km long, six lanes, access-controlled, and runs through Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
- It cost over ₹12,000 crore.
- It is expected to cut travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from over six hours to around two and a half.
- It has 10 interchanges, three railway over-bridges, four major bridges and 12 wayside amenities, plus an Advanced Traffic Management System.
- Wildlife measures include a 12 km elevated wildlife corridor, eight animal passes, two 200-metre elephant underpasses and a 370-metre tunnel near the Daat Kali temple.
In his speech, as reported by PIB, the Prime Minister said the route passes Ghaziabad, Baghpat, Baraut, Shamli and Saharanpur. He also said it would open up trade, industry, warehousing and logistics across the region, and would make Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Mussoorie and the Char Dham circuit easier to reach.
The traffic followed. News Arena India reported on 16 May 2026 that checkpost data from Asharodi, the main entry point to Dehradun, showed 14,218 vehicles entering the city by midnight on a single Friday during a weekend rush.
The bottleneck has moved into the city. In August 2026 Curly Tales, citing NDTV, reported that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans a 12 km, four-lane, access-controlled greenfield bypass. It would run from Jhajhara to the NH-7 Paonta Sahib–Ballupur section and join the expressway near the Asharodi checkpost. The reported cost is about ₹716 crore and the target is April 2027. In April 2026 Swarajya, citing NHAI, reported the bypass was 44% built; our Dehradun bypass update has the details.
What it means for buyers and tenants in Dehradun
This section is our view.
Weekend demand is real, and it favours stays more than flats. If Dehradun is a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Delhi, it works for a weekend. That helps homestays, serviced stays and small hospitality properties near the routes to Mussoorie, Sahastradhara and Rishikesh. If you own a property near those routes, short-stay letting may now pay better than it did. If you are looking for somewhere to stay rather than to buy, see our places to stay in and around Dehradun.
Being near the expressway is not the same as being near your daily life. The expressway ends at the southern edge of the city. Most homes, schools and offices are on the far side of Dehradun's own roads, and those are still congested. If the expressway is the reason you are buying, time the drive from the plot to the Asharodi side on a Friday evening before you pay.
Be careful with "expressway-facing" plots. Land along new highways gets marketed hard. Check title, land use and road access the same way you would anywhere else. We cover the basics in papers to check before buying a plot in Dehradun. A planned bypass is not a finished bypass until it opens.
For people moving from the NCR. It is now much easier to keep a job in Delhi and a home in Dehradun, or to come back often. If you want to rent first and decide later, which we usually recommend, start with our homes for rent in Dehradun.
Questions people ask
When did the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway open?
The Prime Minister inaugurated it in Dehradun on 14 April 2026, according to the Press Information Bureau.
How long does Delhi to Dehradun take now?
The government's figure is around two and a half hours, down from over six. Time inside Dehradun is extra, and on busy weekends it can be a lot more.
Is there a bypass around Dehradun?
Not yet. In August 2026 Curly Tales, citing NDTV, reported that NHAI plans a 12 km bypass joining the expressway near Asharodi, with an April 2027 target. It was reported 44% built in April 2026, so it is not a road you can use today. See our Dehradun bypass update.
