Char Dham Yatra 2026 sets a pilgrim record: what it means for Dehradun hosts
The 2026 Char Dham Yatra passed 56 lakh pilgrims by early October, beating the 2023 record, with a month of the season still to run.
What happened
A record season. UNI reported on 7 October 2026 that the number of pilgrims on the 2026 Char Dham Yatra had crossed 56.18 lakh, above the earlier all-time high set in 2023. A later round-up by Hindutone, citing ETV Bharat and Tourism Department data, put the total at 56.89 lakh up to 7 October against 56.13 lakh in 2023. The two reports use different figures for 2023, but both say this year's count is the highest so far.
How the season built up. The yatra opened on 19 April with Gangotri and Yamunotri, and Badrinath opened on 23 April, Telangana Today reported. Its figures along the way:
- 10 August: 47,02,703 pilgrims in 114 days, about 4.69 lakh more than the 42,34,147 at the same point in 2025
- late September: 53,23,401 pilgrims, against about 46 lakh at the same point a year earlier
Shrine by shrine. As of 7 October, according to the Hindutone round-up of ETV Bharat's figures:
- Badrinath: 19,13,895
- Kedarnath: 16,78,866
- Gangotri: 9,09,983
- Yamunotri: 8,10,343
Telangana Today reported on 29 September that Gangotri had recorded its highest-ever footfall and that Hemkund Sahib had received 3,52,765 visitors.
Still open. The shrines close for winter around Diwali and Bhai Dooj. As of 7 October, Hindutone said the 2026 closing dates had not been officially announced, with Badrinath's date due on Vijayadashami. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has said arrangements for accommodation, food and security were in place along the route.
What it means for owners and hosts in Dehradun
This section is our view.
Dehradun is on the way. Many pilgrims fly into Jolly Grant or come up by road and spend a night in or around Dehradun before heading to the hills, and again on the way back. A busier yatra can mean more demand for one- and two-night stays in the city.
What hosts can do now.
- Register first. Hosts who want to take in yatra guests should be registered under the state's homestay rules. Our post on Uttarakhand homestay rules for 2026 explains how. Registration also keeps a homestay on the domestic power tariff, as explained in our post on the 2026-27 electricity tariff.
- Plan for short stays. Yatra guests often arrive late and leave early. Clear check-in instructions, parking and an early breakfast matter more than extras.
- Think beyond the season. Pilgrim traffic is seasonal. Weekend visitors to Mussoorie and Rishikesh and families visiting students in Dehradun can fill the rest of the year.
Owners thinking of buying to host. One record year does not guarantee the next. Before buying a property to run as a homestay, check whether the locality allows it, whether the building has parking, and whether you can live on site if the rules require it. Our Dehradun localities guide can help you shortlist.
